HIGH school students have put their leadership skills to the test at Somerset Regional Council’s annual Youth Leadership Camp.
Kilcoy, Lowood and Toogoolawah high school students camped at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre in Currimundi from Wednesday, 15 to Friday, 17 January.
The 31 youth leaders were nominated by their high schools for the program.
The students took part in standup paddle boarding, caving, high ropes, beach games, traditional Indigenous games, and archery.
Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt joined Councillor Kylee Isidro on Thursday, 16 January to speak with the students about what it means to be a leader.
“We were impressed with how Somerset’s future leaders carried themselves and gave their all to the camp’s challenges,” Cr Wendt said.
“We hold this camp every year to bring our student leaders together, fostering their leadership skills and building connections across the region.”
Toogoolawah State High School student Charlie Humphreys felt the camp was eye opening.
“Being a leader is inspiring those around you, encouraging others and helping people come out of their shell,” Charlie said.
Lowood State High School student Safira Gersekowski expressed how they can better themselves as a leader in their final year of high school.
“It’s opened new pathways and mindsets in my life and given me the tools I need to be a good leader,” Safira said.
PCYC Fernvale Youth Club Manager Officer TJ Baker and Community Development Officer/Program Coordinator Jennifer Dagger joined Somerset Regional Council in running the camp and hosted a team building session and pool party for the students on the last night.
