Election Signage

Election Signage is a significant and important part of a candidate’s way of advertising who they are and putting a face to a name. Being able to erect election signage for an election is fundamental to a candidate’s freedom of speech. A candidate might be running for election at Local, State or Federal level.

Council’s Local Law 1 Administration and Subordinate Local Law 1.4 Installation of Advertising Devices controls the makeup of any Election sign and the placement of Election signage throughout the Somerset Region.

For all candidates and any member of the public who may be interested:

  • There is no application fee or bond required,
  • The Subordinate Local Law controls where and when an Election Advertising Device may be placed on private property or more particularly near Local and State Roads, and
  • The Subordinate Local Law stipulates the size, shape, and positioning of the sign.

More detail about election signs can be found in the fact sheet here.

Council passed the amendment to the Subordinate Local Law at the Council meeting held on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. This was gazetted on Friday, 29 April 2022. The Notice to the Public can be found here.
