SOMERSET Regional Council’s Director Finance, Geoffrey Smith, announced his retirement at the ordinary meeting held Thursday, 19 December.
Mr Smith has held the role for almost 25 years between Esk Shire Council and Somerset Council and was responsible for bringing more than $65 million in successful grant applications to support Somerset’s growth and prosperity.
The Director finished his time in local government on a high note with two successful grant applications through the Thriving Suburbs Program, totalling $5 million.
“It has been an honour serving Somerset and its residents,” Mr Smith said.
“I am incredibly proud of my achievements, and I look forward to seeing the region continue to flourish.”
Council Chief Executive Officer Andrew Johnson thanked Mr Smith for his years of service and dedication to Somerset.
“I have worked closely with Geoffrey in my 16 years with Council,” Mr Johnson said.
“He is a wonderful, talented man and works tirelessly to support Somerset’s growth.
“Geoffrey’s impact can be felt across the region and his work on grant applications is the reason for many major facilities in our towns, major road connections, the renewal of 49 bridges throughout Somerset, and the success of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.”
Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt joined councillors in congratulating Mr Smith on his retirement.
