Celebrate Seniors Month: Join us for a free regional event in Esk
October is senior’s month and what better way to celebrate than inviting Somerset Seniors to a free regional event.
The event, organised by Somerset Regional Council, will be held on Friday, 25 October at the Somerset Civic Centre starting at 8.45am.
The event includes a morning tea, entertainment, workshop, services expo and lunch.
Tickets are essential and can be secured by phoning Council on 5424 4000.

Free Disaster Preparedness Expo in Somerset
Somerset residents have a great opportunity to learn how to get prepared should disaster strike with a free action-packed disaster preparedness and emergency services expo.
The expo will be held on Saturday, 12 October at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk between 10am and 2pm.
The event, organised by Somerset Regional Council, is a great opportunity for residents to speak with emergency services, council and other agencies to understand their local risk, their impacts and what can be done to get ready ahead of a disaster striking.
Brisbane Valley History Expo coming to Esk
Enjoy exploring the history of the Brisbane Valley at the inaugural Brisbane Valley History Expo to be held in Esk on 26 October.
Between 9am to 2pm head to the Somerset Civic Centre to explore more than a dozen displays from various history groups.
Keynote speakers will be provided on the day from Queensland Museum, Queensland Rail and Bellevue Homestead.
Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the Brisbane Valley and chat with a variety of exhibitors.
There will be food trucks onsite and a wealth of historical knowledge for everyone to enjoy.
The event is being supported by Somerset Regional Council through Regional Arts Development Funding and in partnership with Brisbane Valley Heritage Trails.
The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Somerset Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
Australia Day award nominations now open for Somerset
Somerset residents are being encouraged to nominate an outstanding citizen for one of six Australia Day Award categories.
Each year, Somerset Regional Council proudly hosts an Australia Day Awards Ceremony recognising the outstanding contributions of many Somerset residents.
Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Arts and Culture Award, Sports Award, Community Group of the Year and Event of the Year.
Nominations are open now and close 1 December 2024.
Award winners will be announced in a special presentation on Friday, 24 January at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk.

Rail Trails Conference in Somerset
Somerset Regional Council will be delivering a Rail Trails and Tourism Conference at the Somerset Civic Centre on 6 and 7 November.
This event will highlight the great tourism opportunities available along the BVRT and facilitate discussion between operators about how they can enhance their offerings.
The conference will be delivered in partnership with Bicycling Queensland with the support of the Queensland Government.

Sign up for the Garage Sale Trail
Somerset residents are being encouraged to sign up for the Garage Sale Trail when it returns to the region in November.
Held over two big weekends on the 9-10 and 16-17 November, the trail offers savings for savvy shoppers and helps divert items from landfill.
Somerset Regional Council is backing the nation-wide initiative for another year.
Somerset residents are invited to host their own sale or join a group sale in their
neighbourhood, and can take part over one day or do more across both
weekends.

Somerset Council team test their skills
Somerset Regional Council has selected a team of four officers to take on the Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) Rural Management Challenge on Wednesday, 9 October 2024 in Roma.
The team are expected to put their skills to the test against seven other regional Councils undertaking several tasks on the day.
Somerset Regional Council Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Johnson, said Council is behind the team and encourages officers to continue their professional growth.
“As a council, we pride ourselves on our core values and one of those is striving for excellence,” Mr Johnson said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the team to further their skills and we wish them the best of luck in the challenge.”
The Rural Management Challenge is a developmental program providing Council officers with real problem-solving experiences in a simulated environment to assist with leadership development.
