Somerset Regional Council manage the Somerset Civic Centre and are in the process of developing a program of events and activities to service the Somerset region. Council is looking to provide a range of entertainment, events and creative workshops that are relevant and of interest to the local community. Council aims to create a program that caters to a variety of age-groups including but not limited to; seniors; adolescents; parents; pre-school and school aged children.
As part of this initiative Council hosted a series of dance workshops for school-aged children at the Somerset Civic Centre during the September school holidays. The workshops were well attended and received positive feedback, with most attendees expressing interest for the classes to continue on a regular basis. As a result of this feedback, Council are now considering trialling an after-school dance program at the Somerset Civic Centre in 2022.
Should it proceed, the after-school dance program would entail a one-hour dance class per week for nine weeks during Term 1 of 2022. The program would be facilitated by a professional dance instructor and students would have the opportunity to explore a variety of dance genres over the period including ballet, slow modern, modern and musical theatre styles. The last week would be an open-class and showcase for parents, family and friends to attend and view their child’s learnings.
Council would absorb the majority of the costs to facilitate the program to keep expenses as minimal as possible for attendees. The proposed cost for students to attend the program would be around $10 per class, however we invite feedback on the proposed costing. The service is proposed to start on Monday, 31 January 2022 and run weekly during Term 1 every Monday, with the final class on Monday, 28 March 2022 being a showcase open to family and friends to view the dancers’ learnings. Council may also consider an alternative weekday pending community feedback.
Council are seeking feedback from school-aged children and their carers regarding the proposed program.
