New exhibition featuring Somerset residents on soon

Somerset Regional Council’s regional art gallery, The Condensery, in Toogoolawah will soon present a major collaborative exhibition by Ipswich-based artist Deb Mostert and 26 Somerset artists.

A Sketchbook Practice will open to the public from Saturday, 4 May at 4pm.

Lead artist Deb Mostert has used sketchbooks over the decades as a scaffold for her contemporary art practice.

A Sketchbook Practice is an exhibition that shares pages from over ninety sketchbooks dating back twenty years.

The exhibition will be supported by a collection of community sketchbook displays.

Disaster training for Council team

Somerset Regional Council team members together with members of the Somerset Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) attended Disaster Management Training in Esk this week.

New Mayor Jason Wendt was inducted into his new role of Chair of the Somerset LDMG, with Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke continuing to fill the role of Deputy Chair of the LDMG.

All seven councillors also participated in recovery training together with Council’s CEO and Local Recovery Coordinator, Andrew Johnson and members of the council executive team.

“The training is valuable to ensure that the Somerset region responds and recovers as quickly as possible from any extreme event,” Mr Johnson said.

“The role of the LDMG is to ensure that the Somerset community remains safe and is as resilient as possible.”

 Multicultural Carnival returns to Kilcoy

The second annual Kilcoy Multicultural Carnival is back bigger than ever.

The celebration, organised by Somerset Regional Council, will be held at Yowie Park on 17 May between 3pm and 7pm.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Jason Wendt said the carnival will be a vibrant celebration of diversity, featuring cultural acts and demonstrations.

“This free event will feature performances from various cultural groups, showcasing their traditional dances, music, and customs,” Cr Wendt said.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community.

The Kilcoy Multicultural Carnival is a family-friendly event open to everyone and is proudly funded by the Queensland Government, Sponsored by Kilcoy Global Foods and organised by Somerset Regional Council.

Wild Dog Baiting Program on soon

Somerset Regional Council will hold its next wild dog baiting day on 13 May 2024.

A Council employee will attend four sites to assist with the preparation of 1080 poison baits for the control of dingoes/wild dogs.

These sites are Kilcoy Showgrounds and Middle Creek, Bryden between 7.30am-9am and Fernvale Campdraft grounds and Moore Pony Club Grounds in Station Street between 10.30am-12pm

Somerset Council Meeting

The next Somerset Regional Council ordinary meeting will be held in Esk on Wednesday, 8 May.

The meeting will start at 9am and be held in the Simeon Lord Room at the Esk Library.

Community members are welcome to attend meetings and are encouraged to provide at least 24 hours’ notice of attendance via email to mail@somerset.qld.gov.au or by phoning council on 5424 4000.

Audio from Council meetings are streamed live onto Council’s corporate facebook page, increasing the opportunity for the public to be informed of decision making.
